Barb Dexter

Hi! I’m Barb Dexter. I’m excited about Write Alaska! and think it’s going to be a fun time to write, hike and explore. We’ve brought together a great team of teachers, instructors and tutors. Some are new friends and some I’ve known since they were babies. I love writing and reading and working and being in the Alaska sunshine. My ailing knee will keep me at Base Camp for the daily excursions but I’ll be happy to greet you as you return from your exciting hiking adventures.

During the school year I work for the Child In Transition/Homeless Project which serves children and families that live in shelters, doubled up with friends and relatives and teens, unaccompanied youth, who are living without a parent or guardian. I have been both an English teacher and a social worker in the past. Like Ben, I enjoy baseball. The picture of the two of us is at the World Baseball Classic in Los Angeles in March. The team from Japan won probably because Ichiro Suzuki and Kenji Johjima, two players from my favorite team, the Seattle Mariners, played.

My favorite poets are Mary Oliver and Langston Hughes. I read all the time enjoy too many books to name just one. Take a look at What is the What or A Thousand Splendid Suns or books by Alice Walker, Chris Bohanian, Sherman Alexie and, oh, so many more!
